Finding a mentor isn’t an easy task, especially when you haven’t attended advisory course. But I think it is a vital part of personal development plan. I decided to follow CILIP instructions for finding a mentor.
Guess what? I saw my manager’s name amongst mentors! wow. What should I do now?!
I don’t believe in having a mentor from same place you work at since it could be difficult for both mentor and mentee. Firstly, who doesn’t know about office politics? Secondly it isn’t necessarily comfortable and easy to talk about your future plans with your colleague. Thirdly talking about your weakness with your line manager could be judgemental. Having said that, we do have appraisal with our managers yearly and more or less they know our development status.
It is nice to have help and support from someone for issues and concerns in a non–threatening atmosphere although having mentor from same organisation might work in some cases.
I am looking for mentor from outside of my organisation.
